Atlantic Puffin

Welcoming the Puffins: Lundkommer’s Day

April 14th marks Lundkommer’s Day (Lundkommdag), a cherished occasion dedicated to the return of the Atlantic Puffins, with as many as 200,000 of these charming seabirds gracing the skies. Native to the Atlantic Ocean, the Atlantic Puffin finds its breeding grounds in various regions, including Iceland, Norway, Ireland, Greenland, Nova Scotia, and the Faroe Islands.

A remarkable sight unfolds as these delightful puffins gather at sea before embarking on their journey to the island of Lovund, Norway. Flying in impressive formations and arriving in large flocks, they captivate onlookers with their vibrant colors, a spectacle often unseen by many who have only encountered them in captivity.

Having spent the winter months traversing the vast ocean alone, these puffins reunite with their previous partners upon reaching land, renewing their bond before embarking on the nesting season. Amidst the rugged landscapes, they diligently prepare nesting areas, laying eggs and nurturing their young before bidding farewell to the shores and returning to the sea come fall.

Despite their enduring charm, the Atlantic Puffin faces the threat of declining population numbers, earning them a "vulnerable" status by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Factors such as overhunting, pollution, and climate change have contributed to this decline, prompting protective measures through legislation in many regions.

Let us revel in the wonder of nature's beauty and pledge to safeguard these cherished creatures for generations to come.  As we celebrate the return of these beloved seabirds, we invite you to share your own encounters and experiences with puffins in the comments below.
