The Beginning of Spring, also known as the Vernal or Spring Equinox, is a time of rebirth and renewal after the harsh winter. It’s a time for balance, newness and growth. The equinox is characterized by almost equal duration of daytime and nighttime. During the change in seasons, nature is revitalized, flowers begin to bloom, birds and wildlife return, and daylight hours become longer. Old Norse traditions included the feast of Ostara, a goddess who symbolized rebirth. Like Norwegians, many of us enjoy less snow or cold; more daylight; and the fresh produce of the season.
Ten ways you can celebrate the Vernal Equinox, or Spring:
- Get outside and walk, bike or hike.
- Do a bit of spring cleaning.
- Start working on your garden, landscape or flowerpots.
- Cut or buy a bunch of flowers to brighten your home.
- Plan a party and invite your friends.
- Gather with family around the dining table for a Spring feast.
- Buy a new outfit.
- Recommit to something: journaling, exercise, meditation, etc.
- Put up a bird feeder and watch as the birds return.
- Clean up your devices, declutter them.
If you embrace the idea of rebirth or renewal, you’ll no doubt come up with all kinds of ideas for your own celebration. Enjoy!
