Preikestolen: The Majestic Pulpit Rock of Norway

Preikestolen: The Majestic Pulpit Rock of Norway

Rising almost 2,000 feet above the stunning Lysefjorden is Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock. This magnificent natural landmark offers breathtaking views and can be enjoyed on a fjord cruise, or in kayaks, from below or by hiking to the top. Located in Strand, Rogaland county, Norway, Preikestolen features a cliff with a flat plateau measuring over 80 feet by 80 feet, formed during the Ice Age.

Discovered in 1896, this remarkable site first caught the attention of amateur hiker Thomas Randulf, who saw the rock from the water below and made it his mission to reach the top. Once he did, it quickly became known to others.

The Stavanger Hiking Association began making improvements to the area, and now more than 300,000 visitors make the hike each year. Additional improvement projects were completed in 2013 and 2019, but there are still no toilets on the path. The hike and plateau are safe, but proper preparation is essential for an enjoyable experience.

Pulpit Rock is approximately 25 miles, or less than an hour's drive, from Stavanger. Visitors can drive or take a bus to the site, which is open year-round. The hike from the parking area to the plateau is about 2.5 miles each way, typically taking 3-5 hours depending on fitness level and experience. The hike is moderately difficult, with an elevation gain of just over 1,000 feet and includes forests, swampland, and stone stairways built by sherpas from Nepal.

You can catch a glimpse of Pulpit Rock on the last episode of season two of Vikings or in the final fight scene of Mission: Impossible—Fallout.
