Flor & Fjære: A Taste of Paradise!

Flor & Fjære: A Taste of Paradise

Step into paradise at Flor & Fjære, where May 11th marks the 2024 season opening of this enchanting destination, just a short ferry ride away from Stavanger. Let me share a bit of its captivating story with you. Back in 1965, Åsmund and Else Marie Bryn set their sights on a windswept island called Sør-Hidle, where they purchased a homestead and built a family cabin. Fast forward to 1987, when Åsmund began planting gardens that grew larger with each passing year, attracting visitors from near and far.

In 1995, Olav, their son, along with his wife Siri, opened a restaurant on the island, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Flor & Fjære's journey. During our visit, the lovely Siri guided us through the wonders of this oasis. Since then, the third generation, Endre and Hanne, have taken the reins, ushering in plans for expansion of this sustainable operation.

To experience this sensory feast, be sure to book in advance on their website, florogfjare.no. Your ticket includes a round-trip ferry ride, a guided tour of the gardens, and a sumptuous meal. Upon arrival, charming tour guides welcomed us, though they occasionally mistook us for Norwegians, leading to some delightful misunderstandings.

The gardens themselves are a marvel, offering glimpses of Japanese serenity, sun-kissed beaches, desert landscapes adorned with cacti, and lush tropical beauty. The guided tour, lasting approximately 40 minutes, is both informative and engaging, allowing ample time for questions and photo opportunities.

As for the meal, it's a culinary delight served in the verdant embrace of the "greenhouse jungle restaurant." Fresh, locally sourced ingredients take center stage, which can be complemented by a wine pairing that perfectly accentuates each dish. From tasty appetizers to a traditional fish soup, followed by fish with two sauces, potatoes, and vegetables, and concluding with a seasonal dessert—every bite is a revelation.

After dining, you'll have an hour to explore the sprawling 12.5-acre grounds and peruse the gift shop. We savored every moment, capturing countless memories on camera and indulging in a bit of shopping before reluctantly bidding farewell to this idyllic sanctuary. Trust me, a visit to Flor & Fjære is an experience you'll cherish forever.
